This year proved to be the year of AI, both in the media and entertainment industry and the wider world. As Generative (GenAI) passes over Gartner’s Peak of Inflated Expectations, the business focus now continues to shift from excitement around foundation models to use cases that drive ROI and other benefits.

The discussion around AI in the TV industry gained prominence during the 2023 and gained fever pitch in 2024.

Despite concerns and reservations around job replacement, copyright issues, deep fakes, ownership, creative quality and consumer trust, AI is being actively used in various aspects of TV production and distribution, with the big studios cautiously adopting AI, such as the recent deal between Lionsgate and AI text-to-video developer Runway to create and train an AI tool tailored to Lionsgate’s proprietary film and television content.

Here, we bring together some predictions of how AI might evolve and what it might bring and mean for our industry, from production and transport, through personalisation and advertising.

Generative AI and metadata-driven content efficiency.

Sam Peterson, COO, Bitcentral: “A key trend to look out for in 2025 is Generative AI models, particularly LLMs, being leveraged by news production workflows, revolutionizing how content is discovered, tagged, and repurposed.

“Integrating AI-powered metadata analysis can transform large archives of content into highly searchable databases. With metadata becoming richer and more contextually relevant, AI tools are shifting the editorial workload—freeing journalists from time-consuming cataloging tasks so they can focus on creative storytelling. With AI assisting with metadata categorization, and enabling content producers to surface relevant clips quickly, media companies can facilitate real-time content creation across platforms.

“Another avenue for this trend is the potential for personalized D2C models, as metadata becomes a gateway to understanding audience content preferences on a granular level, improving targeted recommendations and engagement.”
